Comments
Suggested copy: When a comment is submitted, in addition to the form data, the commenter’s IP address and browser user-agent are collected to help detect spam.
A depersonalised string generated from the email address (commonly called a hash) is sent to the Gravatar service if it is in use on the site. Gravatar terms can be reviewed at https://automattic.com/privacy/. After your comment is approved, your comment content and profile picture also appear publicly.
Media
Suggested copy: If a registered user uploads an image to the site, EXIF data containing GPS positions should be avoided. Visitors to the site can download those images and extract the location data from them.
Cookies
Suggested copy: When you write a comment on the site, the name, email and website you provide are saved in cookies. This is for convenience so you do not have to fill these fields again on your next comment. The cookie expiry is one year.
When you visit the login page, we set temporary cookies to determine whether your browser accepts cookies. These cookies contain no personal information and are deleted when you close the browser.
On login to the site we create several cookies that save the login information and editor display options. Login cookies last for two days; the editor screen-options cookie lasts a year. If you tick "Remember me", the login persists for two weeks. On logout the login cookies are removed.
When you edit a post or page, an additional cookie is saved in the browser. This cookie does not contain personal data; it simply stores the ID of the post you have edited. It expires after one day.
Embedded content from other sites
Suggested copy: Posts on the site may use embedded content from external sources (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from external sources behaves exactly as if you had visited the other website.
These sites may collect data about visitors, use cookies or third-party tracking codes, and monitor user behaviour related to the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to the site.
With whom we share user data
Suggested copy: If you request a password reset, the reset email will contain the IP address.
How long we retain personal data
Suggested copy: When you comment, the comment and its metadata are retained in the system for an indefinite period. This is so that all subsequent comments are recognised and approved by us automatically — i.e. they do not appear in the list of comments awaiting moderation.
Personal data of registered users (if any) are also stored in their own user profile. Every user can view, edit or delete their personal data at any time (except that they cannot change their own username). Site administrators can also view and edit this information.
What rights does the user have regarding their personal data
Suggested copy: If you have a registered account or have left a comment on the site, you can request to receive an export file of your personal data containing anything previously provided to us. You can also request that we delete any personal data previously provided. This does not apply to data we are required to retain for administrative, legal or security reasons.
Where the data is forwarded
Suggested copy: Visitor-submitted comments may be checked by an automated spam-filtering service.
