Climate protection

The energy system and material cycles in the service of decarbonisation

Business model and decarbonisation

Climate protection is not a target — it is the basis of the model

The ALTEO Group treats climate protection not as a standalone environmental target but as a defining element of its business model. Both our energy and circular business activities contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving resource efficiency and moving towards a low-carbon economy.

Energy business

Through renewable generation, energy storage, production management and services supporting the flexibility of the electricity system, we contribute to replacing fossil fuels and decarbonising the industry. Storage developments and balancing services enable a higher share of renewables to be integrated into the Hungarian electricity system.

Circular economy business

By recovering the material content of waste, producing secondary raw materials and raising recycling rates, we reduce the emissions associated with primary raw material extraction. Our aim is for as much waste as possible to return to the economic cycle as a valuable input material.

Adaptation and the 2050 target

Commitment to climate neutrality

Adapting to climate change is a priority for the Group; we pay close attention to increasing the efficiency of our fossil power plants and strictly observing environmental regulations.

2050
The ALTEO Group is committed to Hungary reaching renewable energy generation, a circular economy and climate neutrality by this year.
ESG policy and strategy

Strategic frameworks and monitoring

In the energy business the ESG Policy summarises our sustainability commitments; like its ESG Strategy, it was prepared in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The policy also covers our primary environmental positions and planned measures for reducing our environmental footprint.

As a responsible company, the ALTEO Group has a comprehensive sustainability strategy comprising strategic objectives, measures and the metrics needed to track them.

The main measures linked to the strategic goals that the ALTEO Group’s energy business is actively working on cover the mapping and introduction of new business and technological opportunities in order to reduce negative impacts and potential risks. The core activities of the circular economy business — handling manufacturing, hazardous and non-hazardous, electronic, battery and machine-dismantling waste, paper and plastic waste, wood waste — contribute continuously to climate change mitigation.

Our continuous measures

The Group's principal, continuously performed measures

176.5 GWh
electricity from renewable sources in 2025
  • Using renewable energy sources in power generation, including wind, solar and hydro power plants as well as biogas and landfill gas technologies. In 2025 we generated 176.5 GWh of electricity from renewable energy sources.
  • Operating a scheduling service for renewable power plants, through which, since 2020, we have made it possible to operate the installed renewable generation capacity at the highest possible efficiency.
  • Operating continuous emission monitoring systems with high availability in accordance with legal requirements, and complying with the relevant limit values, which ensures regulatory compliance and reduces environmental impact. This measure applies at the level of the industrial power plants operated by our Group.
  • Continuously improving energy efficiency, in line with the goal set in our Integrated Management Policy. As part of this, we carry out investments to achieve various energy efficiency targets and perform diagnostic maintenance.
  • When relocating our headquarters, we also applied energy efficiency considerations in selecting the new office building and the equipment required there.
  • We support talent development and awareness-raising among the next generation in the field of energy efficiency.
  • The circular economy business line recycles industrial waste — replacing, through secondary raw materials, the extraction and processing associated with new raw materials — and, in addition, through complex waste management systems provided to companies, or simply the professional handling of waste, and through environmental compliance and advisory work, it conveys awareness and the principles of the circular economy to the partners concerned.
Transparency and monitoring

Measurable, verifiable climate performance

  • The ALTEO Group's sustainability report now presents the combined climate impacts of the energy and circular economy business lines.
  • The assessment of climate change risks and opportunities is supported by climate scenario analyses.
  • Greenhouse gas emissions (Scope 1-2-3) are fully tracked in accordance with the GHG Protocol, on an ESRS basis.
  • Energy storage and balancing services support the integration of renewable energy in Hungary.
Our 2030 climate targets

Greenhouse gases — by 2030

Group-level emissions reduction runs simultaneously on three Scopes: direct on-site emissions (Scope 1), the footprint of purchased energy (Scope 2) and emissions from the full value chain (Scope 3). The base year is updated in line with the 2025–2030 strategy review.

Scope 3 — Értéklánc
Programmes

Pillars driving the climate targets

Four interlinked workstreams underpin our climate targets: expanding renewable capacity, grid integration with gas balancing, NOx reduction and green finance. Each is a measurable element of the 2025–2030 strategy.

Expansion of the renewable portfolio
HUF 35 billion investment in sustainable energy solutions by 2026. Renewable volume and investment disclosed annually.
Gas power plants to balance renewable volatility
Our gas plants balance renewable variability to contribute to grid stability, so the renewable portfolio can be expanded safely.
Reduction of atmospheric nitrogen oxides
We will cut the NOx emissions of our generation sites by at least 25% by 2030 — an environmental pillar running in parallel with our climate targets.
Green Finance Framework
We have established the capability to issue green bonds or take green loans tied to green objectives under the framework.
Pathway 2030–2050

Two-stage reduction pathway

We set the climate targets on two horizons: alongside the 2030 interim commitments we move toward zeroing Scope 3 by 2050. NOx reduction complements the 2030 pillar.

2030 · 2050

Scope 1 — Direct emissions

2030: -20% · 2050: -50%. Site-level emissions reduction via renewable capacity expansion and efficiency investments.

2030 · 2050

Scope 2 — Vásárolt energia

2030: -30% · 2050: -75%. Greening of the electricity mix consumed and reducing the specific emissions of purchased energy.

2030 · 2050

Scope 3 — Értéklánc

2030: -55% · 2050: -100%. Bringing value-chain emissions to zero by changing supplier requirements and the financing mix.

2030

NOx — Nitrogén-oxidok

2030: -25%. Reduction of NOx emissions at generation sites — an environmental pillar alongside the climate targets.
